Zenon Zawadowycz, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, died Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025. He was 98.
Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Zenon was a son of the late Emilian and Emilia (Tyschyk) Zawadowycz. After World War 2, he traveled from Bremerhaven, Germany to the United States aboard the General SD Sturgis in November of 1950 ; he landed in New York City and traveled to Philadelphia to live with his aunt and cousin.
He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1952 and after basic training, he married the former Lidia Iwash. He was transferred to Camp Guynemer in Fontainebleau, France during the Korean War where he served as an Air Policeman. Camp Guynemer was the headquarters for Allied Air Forces Central Europe (AAFCE), a U.S.-led NATO command responsible for air operations in the central European region, from 1951 until 1967. Lidia joined him in France where their oldest daughter, Diana, was born. In 1954, Zenon was transferred to Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine where he was discharged with the rank of Airman 1st Class in 1956.
The family returned to Philadelphia, settling in the Fairmount section of the city where their youngest daughter Marta was born. Zenon enrolled at Temple University and received an Associate's Degree. After he graduated from Temple, he worked for McCormick Engineering (now McCormick Taylor) until joining United Engineers. In 1968, Zenon and his family left for Lake George, New York, where he worked for Rist & Frost Associates in Glen Falls, NY until returning to United Engineers in 1976. He retired in 1992.
While living in New York state, Zenon was an avid skier and enjoyed frequenting the ski resorts in the Adirondack Mountains and Vermont, as well as playing tennis and watching his favorite soccer teams. During the warmer seasons, he operated a family-owned resort called Skylark Motel alongside his wife, Lidia.
Zenon is predeceased by his wife Lidia (Lidia died in 2023) and is survived by his daughters Diana Zawadowycz and Marta Giorgio (the late John) and his granddaughters, Maya Ermocida, Alexa Giorgio and Gianna Giorgio.
Zenon's family will greet friends on Thursday at 10:30 AM at St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church. Requiem Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 AM. Military Honors, followed by Committal Prayers, will be held at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
