Walter (Wolodymyr) Mykietiuch Obituary

Walter (Wolodymyr) Teodor Mykietiuch passed away peacefully after a long illness on October 11, 2025 in Jaroslaw, Poland not far from his mother’s birthplace.

Walter was born in Philadelphia, PA on August 11, 1956 to parents Aleksander and Kazimiera Mykietiuch, who had immigrated from Germany after WWII. They lived in the Northern Liberties section where he attended Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral School. After graduation, the family moved to northeast Philadelphia where Walter attended Northeast High School.

Walter spent his summers in Wildwood Crest, NJ where his parents ran a vacation villa and there he developed many practical skills in home maintenance. This led to a career as a home remodeling contractor.

Walter enjoyed life with gusto and a happy go lucky attitude. His seashore experience introduced him to boating where he became an avid water skier. His passion for adventure led him to snow skiing in mountain ranges in the U.S. and Europe, and a scuba diving course at a local YMCA resulted in trips to Maine where he caught lobsters by hand, and to tropical waters further south.

Walter’s travels eventually landed him in Ukraine and Poland where his parents’ extensive family network kept him busy.  During one such visit, he extended his stay to take care of an elderly aunt, and that’s when he decided to make Ukraine his permanent residence with regular trips to relatives in Poland during holidays and special occasions.

Walter is predeceased by his parents, Aleksander and Kazimiera Mykietiuch.  He is survived by brothers Bohdan (Donna+) and Alexander; sisters Maria Taney (Donald) and Irene Giuseppini (Frank); nephews Mark Mykietiuch, Robert Fisher (Laura), Julian Mykietiuch, and Christopher Giuseppini; nieces Natalie Mele (Adam), Valerie Minnick (John), and Jillian Giuseppini; great nieces and nephew: Catherine, Odessa, John, and Anna; and many cousins in Europe.

Donations can be made in his memory to support aid to Ukraine. To do so, please send a check to "Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception” with “Ukraine Aid” in the memo, mailed to 830 North Franklin Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123.

The funeral took place in Jaroslaw, Poland on October 13, 2025.
