Vera Todoriv

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Vera Donetz Todoriv on the 19th of November 2025 with her daughter by her side.

Vera was our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother born in Ukraine, Pryluky which was a part of Poltavska Oblast (at the time of her birth) on March 1st, 1931.  Vera was barely a child of two years of age when the horrific deeds of the Bolsheviks brought tremendous pain and suffering to Vera and her family when they came to confiscate any food harbored by her family and to take over their multi-generational family home. At that time Vera’s grandmother and uncle were forced onto a wagon and exiled to Siberia.  Vera’s father was arrested for resisting to give up his home and taken to a prison in Russia. Homeless, Vera’s mother was forced to leave little Vera with a great aunt while she made the trek to Russia with her older daughter, Maria, to seek the release of her husband. 

This was one of the darkest times of Ukrainian history, the Holodomor.  Vera never forgot the hunger that she experienced during that time.  Fortunately, Vera’s parents from Russia were able to clandestinely send food and support to the family and saved them from perishing. 

As a teenager, Vera met the love of her life and future husband, Bohdan, at a displaced person’s camp in Heidenau, Germany. Though Vera’s family emigrated to Brazil, Bohdan was lucky to have been able to move to the United States.  After asking for Vera’s hand in marriage in 1954, he flew to Brazil with a wedding dress draped over his arm to marry his love, Vera, and bring her back to his new home in Philadelphia.  

After her move to the United States, Vera began her tireless work to bring her whole family to the United States from Brazil.  Vera made sure that both her sisters and her parents had a beautiful home to live in upon their arrival and that her nieces were well taken care of and that the family would never suffer again. Vera was determined to prove that the Bolsheviks would not succeed in oppressing Ukrainians and devoted her life to ensuring that her family would live a good life and would respect their Ukrainian heritage, language and culture.

Vera was of Cossack blood, two of her male ancestors being Cossack “Polkovnycky.”  Vera’s heart was immense.  She could never pass someone in need without helping them. Vera passed on her love of Ukraine to her grandchildren.  Taking early retirement from her job as a lab technician at Smith Kline, Vera would travel 3.5 hours every week instilling in them a love for the country and culture of their heritage and ensuring that they learn to speak Ukrainian and learn what it meant to be Ukrainian. 

Vera will be greatly missed by her daughter, Nina and son-in-law George Woskob, her grandchildren, Larissa Castner and husband Thomas Castner, George Woskob, Alexander Woskob and great-grandchildren Alexander Castner and James Castner. 

Vera leaves behind her beloved nieces, Irena Labensky, Lilia Kozicky with husband Petro, Nina Cardillo with husband Matthew, Andrea Faustini with husband Lou and their respective families.

Vera was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bohdan, her sister Nina Mark and husband Andrij Mark, sister Maria Nanashko and husband Volodymyr Nanashko and daughter Dana Reitarowski and her husband Alex Reitarowski, and her great niece Liliya Kozicky.

Family and friends are invited to her viewing on Monday at 6 PM with Panakhyda to be sung at 7 PM at Annunciation BVM Ukrainian Catholic Church, Melrose Park, PA.  Her funeral will be held on Tuesday at 12 PM at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church in South Bound Brook, NJ with Requiem Services sung at 1 PM.  Burial will follow at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery.

З глибоким сумом повідомляємо про відхід у вічність Віри Донець Тодорів, яка мирно спочила 19 листопада 2025 року в присутності своєї доньки.

Віра була люблячою матір’ю, бабусею та прабабусею. Народилася в Прилуках, що на той час входили до Полтавської області, 1 березня 1931 року. Віра була лише дворічною дитиною, коли жахливі дії більшовиків принесли неймовірний біль і страждання їй та її родині: вони прийшли, щоб конфісковувати всю їжу, яку мала сім’я, та забрати їхній родинний дім, у якому жили багато поколінь. У той час її бабусю та дядька силоміць посадили на підводу й заслали до Сибіру. Батька заарештували за спротив і вивезли до в’язниці у Росії. Залишившись без дому, її мати була змушена залишити маленьку Віру у двоюрідної тітки, а сама разом зі старшою донькою, Марією, вирушила до Росії, щоб добиватися звільнення чоловіка. Це був один із найтемніших періодів української історії — Голодомор. Віра ніколи не забувала голоду, який пережила, але, на щастя, її батьки, перебуваючи в Росії, змогли потайки надсилати харчі сім’ї, рятуючи їх від загибелі.

Підлітком Віра зустріла кохання свого життя і свого майбутнього чоловіка в таборі для переміщених осіб у Гайденалі, Німеччина. Хоч родина Віри емігрувала до Бразилії, Богданові пощастило отримати можливість виїхати до США. Попросивши її руки в 1954 році, Богдан прилетів до Бразилії з весільною сукнею, акуратно складеною на руці, щоб одружитися з коханою Вірою та забрати її до свого нового дому у Філадельфії. Переїхавши до США, Віра невтомно працювала, щоб перевезти своїх рідних до Америки та подбати, щоб її сестри та батьки мали гарний дім, щоб племінниці були доглянуті, і щоб родина більше ніколи не знала нужди. Вона була сповнена рішучості довести, що більшовики не зламають українців, і присвятила своє життя тому, щоб її родина жила гідно та шанувала українську спадщину, мову і культуру. Вона була потомком козацького роду — двоє її предків були козацькими полковниками. Серце Віри було безмежним — вона ніколи не проходила повз людину, яка потребувала допомоги.

Віра передала свою любов до України своїм онукам. Вийшовши на ранню пенсію з роботи лаборанта в Smith Kline, вона щотижня долала 3,5 години дороги, щоб прищепити їм любов до української культури, спадщини та навчити їх української мови й відчуття того, що означає бути українцем.

Віру глибоко оплакують її донька Ніна та зять Джордж Воскоб, онуки Лариса Кастнер із чоловіком Томасом Кастнером, Джордж Воскоб, Олександр Воскоб, а також правнуки Олександр Кастнер і Джеймс Кастнер.

Світлу пам’ять про Віру зберігають її улюблені племінниці: Ірена Лабенська, Лілія Козіцька з чоловіком Петром, Ніна Кардилло з Меттью, Андреа Фаустіні з Лу та їхні родини. Віру також випередили у вічність її коханий чоловік Богдан, сестра Ніна Марк з чоловіком Андрієм Марком, сестра Марія Нанашко з чоловіком Володимиром Нанашком та донька Дана Рейтаровська з чоловіком Алексом Рейтаровським.
