Tonia Kuzmenko, a longtime resident of Philadelphia, died Friday, January 10, 2025. She was 88.
Born in Buda, Ukraine to Ivan and Maria Kuzmenko, Tonia Kuzmenko fled to Germany at a very young age with her parents and older sister Nadia during WWII. At the age of 13, she and her family left Germany July 13, 1949, and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts July 24, 1949 where they planned on moving to Madison, Wisconsin. Plans changed and they chose Philadelphia instead.
During Tonia’s grade school years she attended Immaculate Conception Ukrainian School, continuing her education at Murrell Dobbins High School where she found a profound interest in the arts. After high school she continued her education at the Art Institute of Philadelphia.
As a young adult, she began her career in the graphic arts; along the way she became a magnificent painter! Her interest in the arts followed her through life, creating beautiful pieces which she displayed throughout her home. Tonya also loved her parish of St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, spending time with people by going out to dinner or taking day trips to Atlantic City, NJ.
She will truly be missed. Eternal Memory.
Friends are invited to gather on Friday at 9 AM at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. Requiem Services will be sung at 10 AM. Burial will follow at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery.
