Thomas (Tom) Winthrop, age 88, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at his home in the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia. He was surrounded by his wife and children.
Tom was born on September 26, 1931 in Philadelphia to Robert and Mary Winthrop.
He attended Jules Mastbaum Vocational High School, where Tom loved to sing and performed in many of the School’s productions. Tom was a veteran of the Korean War and was in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955. He was proud to serve on the ship the USS Talladega. After the Navy, Tom went to work for Acme Markets and retired in 1986 after forty-two years of service.
On October 25, 1952 he married the love of his life Eleanor (Ellie) (nee Campbell) and together they have six children. Tom enjoyed spending time with family and going on vacations. He liked woodworking; gardening and watching Phillies and Eagles games. Even though he was an Eagles fan, he had a place in his heart for Joe Montana and the 49ers! He also had a special affection for Perry Como and when he sang, he sounded much like him.
He is survived by his wife Ellie of 68 years; six children; Peggy (Andrew dec’d); Marianne (Robert); Janice (Gregory); Thomas (Michele); Brian (Sindy) Karen (Albert); seven grandchildren; Eric (Joanna), Bryan, Aaron, Zach, Justin, Julia, Olivia; and three great-grandchildren; Layla, Charlotte and Hayley.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, services and interment will be held privately.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for every prayer, kind word of comfort, and all that you’ve done to express your love towards us.
