Taras Kowal Obituary

Taras Kowal, a resident of Huntingdon Valley, a man with a perpetual smile on his face, died suddenly on Sunday, September 11, 2022.  He was 88.

Born in Drohobych, Ukraine, Taras was the son of the late Ivan and Tatiana Kowal.  He and his family emigrated from Germany to the United States, entering Ellis Island in 1950.  They traveled to Philadelphia to take up residence.

Taras was a graduate of Muriel Dobbins Technical School and later graduated from Temple University with a degree in Electronics.  He entered the US Army in 1957 and was discharged with the rank of Specialist Four.

After his military service, Taras was employed by Narco Avionics where he worked as an electronics technician for over 40 years; he retired in 2007 at the age of 73.

He was an active member of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian-American Sports Club 'Tryzub'.  He loved his faith and his church and; however, there was no bigger love for him than his family, especially his grandchildren.  He enjoyed soccer, playing chess, gardening, reading the newspaper and all things Ukrainian.  He was especially proud of his children's successes. He could spark up a conversation with anyone, anywhere and had a genuine curiosity for others.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Marcziwskyj Kowal; his children: Michael John Kowal (Oksana), Christine Toback (Jeff) and Stephan Kowal (Jacqueline); and his dear grandchildren:

Anastasiya Kowal, Diana Kowal, Michael Kowal, Zachary Toback and Nathan Toback.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday at 10 AM at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral.  Requiem Services will begin at 11 AM.  Military Honors will be rendered immediately after services.  Committal prayers will be held at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA at at later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Taras' memory may be made to: United Ukrainian American Relief Committe (to provide for the Drohobych, Ukraine orphanage) or the HOPE Fund, providing medical care for injured Ukrainian soldiers, care of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral.
