Stephen Malen Obituary

Stephen P. Malen, 73, of Philadelphia, PA passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family and friends at Jeanes Hospital.

Stephen was born on August 14, 1952, in Philadelphia, PA.  He was the first born of First Generation Ukrainian-American Parents Stephen Paul, Sr and Lillian Malen.  Since all four grandparents came from Ukraine during the Revolution and the First World War, Stephen was immersed in Ukrainian Catholic traditions and customs.  He was 6 years old before he began to learn English so he could attend American schools.

He attended St. William Roman Catholic Grade School (1966) followed by Cardinal Dougherty High School (1970). Stephen did one semester of college and dropped out in favor of joining the U.S. Army.  After receiving an Honorable Discharge, he worked several part time jobs and full time jobs until he joined the Philadelphia Police Department where he worked for 39 years.  Stephen received several citations and awards during his time on the police force for which the City of Philadelphia was grateful.

He was the beloved father of David Paul, Laura Anne and Timothy, and the grandfather of Alexander James Morris and Paige Kathleen Palmer.  He was also Uncle to Edward Joseph, Christopher Scott, Stephen Michael and Olivia Rose.  He is survived by his loving, long-time partner Kathryn Thompson.

Steve was the oldest of three siblings and a great help to his brothers Joseph Stanley and Thomas John throughout his life.  A big fan of the Phillies and Eagles, he would watch the games on TV with his mother and anyone else who wandered into the house during game times.

Steve was active in the Church of St. William Roman Catholic Church as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, The Men of Malvern (St. Joseph in the Hills Retreat Group), and the Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th Degrees. He also worked with local funeral homes throughout the city including Fletcher Nasevich Funeral Home, Campbell Thomas & Co. Funeral Home, Lamb Funeral Home and Mann Funeral Home.

His favorite place on Earth was Disney World, Florida and he was known for organizing, with meticulous details, many vacation trips for his family, the police department and friends.  The stories they tell warm the hearts of all who participated in these trips.

Steve’s family will greet friends and family for visitation on Monday, April 27, 2026 from 8:45 AM to 10 AM at St. William Church, 6200 Rising Sun Avenue Philadelphia, PA; his Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 AM.  Ukrainian Catholic committal prayers will be held at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, 438 Cedar Road, Fox Chase, PA 19027 immediately following Mass.

Stephen’s love and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
