Stefania Nazar, a longtime resident of Northeast Philadelphia, died Monday, August 4, 2025, at her home. She was 90.
Born in Misylu, Ukraine, Stefania was a daughter of the late Wasyl and Mychalina (Zborowsky) Stasiuk. She emigrated to the United States with her family, arriving in New York in October of 1949.
On May 12, 1952, she married Bohdan Nazar. Together, they raised five children. She worked for Keebler Cookies on Whitaker Avenue until they relocated and she found employment at Textile Technologies, a manufacturer of protective vests for law enforcement, until she retired.
Stefania was very active in her beloved St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church. She worked tirelessly in their kitchen, making endless plates of pyrohy. When the main church was sold, she continued running the kitchen at their new location on the grounds of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic School. Eventually, St. Josaphat's closed their doors and Stefania transferred her skills to her new parish, Annunciation BVM Ukrainian Catholic Church. She worked with her fellow parishioners for many years, raising money for the church with their pyrohy sales, until she could no longer work and contribute the way she once did.
Stefania is survived by her daughter, Mary Binder (Michael); her son, Bohdan Nazar, Jr. (Sylvia) and her son Roman. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Rosalie Gibson (+ Charles), Anthony Nazar (Lilly), Mark Bezpalko (Julia), Natalie (Timothy Vargas), Alexander Mykijewycz and Jessica Carasso (Matthew) and her great-grandchildren: Andrew, Oliver, Julian and Zachary. She is also survived by her brother, Bohdan Stasiuk (Mary) and she is predeceased by her husband Bohdan Nazar, Sr.; her daughter, Lila Volpe (+ Richard); her daughter, Anna Mykijewycz (+ William); and her siblings, Eugenia Prokopchuk (John) and Marian Stasiuk.
Her viewing will be held on Friday at 6 PM at the Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home. Parastas Prayers will be sung at 7 PM. Her funeral will be held on Saturday at 9 AM at the funeral home with Requiem Liturgy to be celebrated at 10:30 AM at Annunciation BVM Ukrainian Catholic Church, Melrose Park, PA. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Annunciation BVM UCC (memo: kitchen).
