Sister Francis Bukaczyk, OSBM Obituary

Sister Francis Bukaczyk, O.S.B.M. died suddenly Sunday February 25, 2024 at the Sisters of St. Basil the Great Motherhouse in Fox Chase Manor.  Sister Francis was 81.

Born in Ukraine, Sister was a daughter of the late Iwan and Rosalia Kusnir Bukaczyk.  After World War II, the Bukaczyk's resided in Germany before traveling to Argentina.  Sister attended high school in Argentina and, in 1963, she entered Christ the King Province of the Sisters of St. Basil the Great in Buenos Aires; she professed her first vows in 1965 and Solemnly Professed her final vows on May 30, 1971.  While in Argentina, Sister's duties included orphanage responsibilities, elementary school (5 to 12 year olds), the Sisters boarding house (13 to 18 year olds), parish apostolic work, catechesis, teaching kindergarten and pastoral and social work.  

In 1988, Sister Francis emigrated along with her sister, Sister Rose Ann Bukaczyk, O.S.B.M., to the United States to be closer to their families who had emigrated earlier.  They transferred to Jesus, Lover of Humanity Province in Fox Chase Manor, PA.

Sister Francis' ministries in the USA took her to Holy Ghost Parish in Chester, PA; St. John the Baptist Parish in Newark, NJ; SS Cyril & Methodius Parish in Olyphant, PA; St. Josaphat Cathedral in Parma, OH; St. John the Baptist Parish in Northampton, PA; Immaculate Conception Parish in Hamtramck, MI; and St. Nicholas Cathedral in Chicago, IL before returning to the Sister's Motherhouse in Fox Chase Manor in 2016.  Her ministries included teaching lower elementary classes and catechesis and preparation for Solemn Eucharist.

Sister Francis previously had been known as Sister Markianna.

She is survived by her siblings: Sister Rose Ann Bukaczyk, Olga Miciak, Teresa Laskus (Zbigniew) and Michael Bukaczyk (Anna).  She is predeceased by her parents and a brother, Nicholas Bukaczyk (the late Helen). 

Relatives and friends are invited to Sister Francis' viewing on Wednesday at 6:15 PM at Holy Trinity Chapel; Parastas Prayers will be sung at 6:30 PM.  Her funeral will be held on Thursday at 10:30 AM with Requiem Services sung at 11 AM.  Burial will follow at the Sisters of St. Basil the Great convent cemetery.
