Roman Kokolskyj Obituary

Roman Kokolskyj entered God's eternal kingdom on March 1, 2024.  He was husband, best friend and life partner of over 60 years to Marta Stepaniak Kokolskyj; he was the beloved Tato of Lydia Kokolskyj and husband Philip West, and Larysa Kokolskyj and husband Mark Matson.  He treasured his grandchildren Charles Kokolskyj & husband Michael Mackiewicz, Jurij Kokolskyj and partner Amalia Fuentes, Michael and Alexander Gorman.

Born in Stryj, Ukraine, Roman and his family came to America in 1947 after an arduous journey to escape Russian and Nazi persecution.  A member of Ukrainian American Veterans Post 1, Roman joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea.  Roman and Marta met in NYC where they married in 1964 and lived there for many years.  As an electrical engineer, Roman worked in the field of power engineering where he participated in building the U.S. nuclear power infrastructure.

An active member of the Ukrainian diaspora, Roman's youth was spent in PLAST.  He sang in the choir Dumka for many years and volunteered with the Ukrainian Sports Club of America as a men's soccer and women's volleyball coach and manager.  He was an avid sports fan, with a particular fondness for each and every Ukrainian team or Ukrainian athlete, loved watching wrestling and hockey but his heart belonged to soccer and the Premier League Team, Liverpool FC.

Roman is also survived by his brother-in-law Walter Stepaniak and wife Luba, his many nieces and nephews, godchildren, adopted sons, daughters and granddaughters.

His family will greet friends on Friday at 10:30 AM at St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church, Cherry Hill.  Requiem Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 AM.  Interment will be private.
