Reverend Gregory Maslak Obituary

Rev. Gregory N. Maslak unexpectedly fell asleep in the Lord, Tuesday March 10, 2026 at home.

Father Maslak was a native of Dunmore PA.  He was born in Scranton, PA to the late Dr. Harry and Julia (Mutchko) on September 12, 1947.

Father Maslak graduated from Dunmore High School.  Upon high school graduation, he enrolled in the University of Scranton where he received a BS in sociology.  He then answered his personal call to the priesthood and became a seminarian at St Josaphat Ukrainian Seminary in Washington, DC.  Concurrently, he enrolled in Catholic University and graduated in the spring of 1972 with a Bachelor of Divinity.

On Sunday November 12, 1972 Father Maslak was ordained as a priest on the feast of Saint Josaphat, priest and martyr, by the late Metropolitian Ambrose Senyshyn, OSBM in the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Philadelphia, PA.  Father Maslak celebrated his first mass of Thanksgiving on December 10,1972 at his home parish, St. Vladimir Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Scranton, PA.

Father Gregory’s first assignment was Assistant Pastor at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Philadelphia.  After his initial assignment, Father Gregory had many parish assignments including St. Andrew in Philadelphia (also visiting priest Holy Ghost, Chester and Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception); Vice Rector St. Basil’s Seminary, Stamford, Conn; St. Michael, Pottstown, PA;  Assistant Pastor, St. John Ukrainian Catholic Church, Syracuse, NY; Nativity of the Mother of God, Roxborough, PA while helping at St. Basil Orphanage and teaching religion; St. Michael, Cherry Hill NJ and Sts. Peter and Paul, Williamstown, NJ;  Sts Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ansonia, Conn; St. Michael, Shenandoah, PA and St. Mary McAdoo, PA; Nativity of the Mother of God, Reading, PA and St. Michael, Pottstown, PA; St. Mary, McAdoo, PA and St. Michael, Hazleton,PA; St. Mary Bristol, PA; and Senior priest Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception while helping with the spiritual needs of Ascension Manor when appropriate.

Father Maslak also enjoyed his holiday dinners with his family; summer barbeques, especially well done hamburgers and hot dogs; yearly beach trips with his family to Wildwood Crest, NJ (Mack’s pizza, Sea Shell ice cream and the Jolly Roger), crab cakes or any dinner at Coopers Seafood restaurant in Scranton, PA ,and all the family christenings, first holy communions, graduations, and weddings. He also was a dog lover, especially his dog Tayna.

Father Gregory had a deep devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary.  He was a kind, loving, caring, generous and humble man who loved being a parish priest.  Although he had many transfers (many people called him him the flying father because of them) and put many miles on his car, he dedicated his life to each parish and its parishioners he served.

In July 2015, Reverend Gregory Maslak entered into retirement after many years of devoted service to the Church.

Father D. George Worschak, who had known Father Gregory for more than fifty years, remembers him as a man of deep prayer and a dedicated pastor.  According to him, Father Gregory prayed wholeheartedly and encouraged others to join him in prayer.  His ministry was marked by self-sacrifice, care for people, and faithfulness to his priestly vocation. “He was a good and caring person, a compassionate priest, and a true friend,” Father D. George Worschak recalls.

Father Maslak is survived by his sisters Barbara (Jim), Arlene (William); five nieces and nephews: Julia, Amanda, Michael, Joseph and Sara; and six great grandnieces and nephews: Gideon, Mia, Lily, Brooks, Emery and Shepherd; many cousins and his special friends William and Fran Kerrigan and Paul and Joan Kravchack.

His body will lie in repose on the Thursday March 19, 2026 at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Philadelphia from 6 PM to 8 PM.  Priestly Parastas will be sung at 6 pm.
