Natalia Dorozynsky Mackiw, formerly of the Fairmount section of Philadelphia, died Thursday, May 23rd, 2024. She was the wife of the late Roman; loving mother of George, Eugene (Holly) and Sophia Mackiw Geiger (Michael); dear grandmother of Mark, Kristina, Alexander and Brianna and great grandmother of Kinsley.
Natalia was born in Uhniv, Ukraine near Lviv in 1927. Fleeing the onset of Stalin’s occupation of Ukraine she and her mother (Sophia Dorozynsky Tesluk) fled their beloved home for Poland, only to be placed in a Displaced Persons Camp by Hitler’s Nazi Regime in Ulm, Germany near Frankfurt, as forced laborers for the duration of World War II. Upon liberation she and her mother immigrated to New York City’s East Village – often dubbed as “Little Ukraine” for her early adult life. She met and married Roman Mackiw, also a Ukrainian immigrant and moved to the Fairmount Section of Philadelphia where she raised her three children, George, Eugene and Sophia. Many Ukrainian immigrants settled in the Fairmont Section of Philadelphia. Natalia was a light in the Ukrainian community, a founding member of and greatly contributed to establishing Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Parish Elementary School. She spent many years fundraising, making pierogies and helping with festivals benefitting Saint Nicholas.
Relatives and friends are invited to Natalia’s viewing on Friday, May 31st at 9:30 AM at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. Requiem Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at La Strada Italian Restaurant beginning at 1:30 PM.
Natalia’s spirit and Ukrainian traditions will be kept alive and thriving through her loving children, grandchildren and great grandchild.
In spite of many early challenges Natalia lived a long, strong, full and happy life and she will be truly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Natalia's memory may be made to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.
