Nadia Wasylkiwskyj (Hryckowian), age 89, passed way on March 21, 2026.
Nadia was born in 1937 in the village of Berezka in Ukraine, to Mykhailo and Mary(Otrok) Hryckowian. She was the youngest of four siblings, the others being Mykhailo, Lybomyra, and Wolodymyra. As a young girl she had many talents; she excelled at the discus and shotput and even toured Poland with a basketball team, which we marveled at because she was only 5’1”! She would tell us it was because “she was a good jumper.” In addition, she won first place in a poetry contest out of 500 students. Nadia was accepted to medical school in Poland and attended there until she left to come to the United States where her mother and father were living.
After she arrived in the US, she attended The American Academy of Dramatic Arts and worked as an actress and singer. She had the stage name Nadia Nazar and was a dramatic soprano. Singing the part of Carmen was a highlight, as was winning the title of Miss New Newark and being on the Merv Griffin Show. She had impeccable style and a love for fashion.
Nadia and Wasyl Wasylkiwskyj married in 1960 and had two children together, Robert and Chrystine. They lived in New York City and then moved to the Washington DC area.
In her later years Nadia enjoyed yearly vacations to Ocean City, New Jersey with her grandchildren and visiting them throughout the year.
She spent her last years living with her daughter Chrystine in Pennsylvania. Nadia reflected the love spoken of in 1Corinthians 13 4-7. She was patient, kind, did not insist on her own way, and endured all things. She fought valiantly to live life with joy while battling illness for 60 years. Her love for life and her cats was contagious and she will be deeply missed. She is our hero and will always be in our hearts.
Nadia was predeceased by her parents, Mykhailo and Mary Hryckowian. She is survived by her sister Wolodymyra Wasicko, her children Chrystine and Robert, and her grandchildren Oksanna (Nathan), John, Michael and Sofia.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Tuesday, March 31st at 10AM at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church , 280 Main Street, South Bound Brook, New Jersey. A Funeral service will begin at 11AM. A luncheon in her memory will follow at Bound Brook Fire Department Hall 17 Van Keuren Avenue Bound Brook, New Jersey.
