Nadia Broyaka passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 3, 2024, in Hollywood, Florida. She was a beloved mother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Nadia was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Her parents were Nikifor Pashtenko and Tekla Cherkas. Her family moved to Salzburg, Austria, where they lived for four years, and then they moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil, during World War II, where she grew up. She and her family subsequently relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1960. Nadia moved to Hollywood, Florida, during the last year of her life to be closer to one of her sons.
Nadia was multicultural and spoke many languages, including English, Ukrainian, Portuguese and Spanish.
Nadia was very religious and devoted a considerable amount of time and energy to supporting her Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and in Philadelphia at St. Mary’s and St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Churches. Nadia loved to sing in the church choirs and always volunteered to raise funds for her churches by making varenyky in the churches’ kitchens.
When Nadia’s first husband passed away, their two boys were very young and, as a result, she had to work full-time to financially support her family. Nadia was a seamstress and took great pride in her workmanship. Although Nadia worked full-time, her number one priority was to raise her two boys and guide them in pursuing their educations and preparing them for life. She was so proud of her boys when they both finished college and went on to achieve advanced higher education degrees.
Nadia was predeceased by her first husband, Paul Mykolajtchuk; her second husband, Anatoliy Broyaka; her parents; her brothers, Mykola and Gregory Pashtenko; her brother-in-law, Wasyl Jewtushenko; and her sister and brother-in-law, Tatiana and Tychon Antonez.
Nadia is survived by her son and her daughter-in-law, Ted and Bonnie Michaels; her son and daughter-in-law, Jurij and Alicia Mykolajtchuk; her grandchildren, Heather and Holly Michaels, and Paul and Catherine Mykolajtchuk; her sister, Raissa Jewtushenko; and her nephews and nieces.
Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her. Her sons are forever indebted to their amazing Mom! May God bless Nadia’s soul and admit her into the Kingdom of Heaven! Вічная Пам’ять!
Visitation will be held at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church in South Bound Brook at 9 AM. Requiem Services will be sung at 10 AM.
