Mathew Elavumkal Obituary

Mathew J. Elavumkal, born on February 18, 1936, in Kappad, Kerala, India, passed away after a life marked by dedication, love, and service to others. He was the firstborn son of the late Joseph and Mary Elavumkal and the eldest of 11 siblings; a role he embraced with deep responsibility and care.

In 1979, Mathew married Savio and together they shared 36 years of marriage until her passing in 2015. Their partnership was a testament to their mutual respect and affection, qualities that were evident to all who knew them.

Mathew's family extended far beyond his immediate household. He was the loving brother of Thresiamma Poruthur and her husband Jose, and a cherished uncle to their children - John Poruthur (wife Susan, children Noah and Jacob) and Jocelyn Kuryan (husband John, children Maya, Sonya, and Joshua). His legacy also lives on through his siblings in India - Rose Martin, Jose and Sophy Elavumkal, Thomas and Leelamma Elavumkal, Jessy and Anthony Amaldas, Kochurani and Roy Mathew, Shirly and John Britto, as well as the late Sebastian and Mary Elavumkal - and through numerous nieces and nephews both in India and abroad.

Mathew's career took him from Kerala to Rome, where he spent the early part of his professional life. In the late 1960's, he immigrated to the United States, where he built a successful career in social work and mental health. His work culminated in his role as the CEO of COMHAR, Inc., where he led with compassion and a commitment to improving the lives of others.

Mathew was affectionately know as "Uncle" by many, a title that reflected the warmth and generosity he shared with everyone he met. Both Mathew and Savio were renowned for their hospitality; always opening their home to family and friends for gatherings that left lasting memories.
