Mary Ellen Smith

Mary Ellen Smith, born on October 18, 1933, in Perkasie, PA passed away peacefully on December 25, 2024. A beloved figure in her community, Mary dedicated over 40 years of her life to teaching in the Philadelphia school system, where she inspired countless students as a Health Education teacher and coach for softball and gymnastics. Many of her former students, recognizing her profound impact on their lives, attended her 90th birthday celebration just last year.

A graduate of West Chester Teachers College, Mary was a pioneer for women in education earning her degree while working as a server at the New Jersey shore during the summers. Her commitment to education and equal rights was evident throughout her life as she was a lifelong Democrat who believed in democracy and championed equal rights for all.

Mary was not only an educator but also a passionate artist and gardener. She loved to share her hobbies which included painting, carving, and crafting with her friends and family. Her creativity shone brightly during her time at Southampton Estates, where she once transformed a simple request for Valentine's Day decorations into an abundance of red hearts that filled the unit with joy.

Mary's love for music was boundless; she enjoyed all genres, often singing and tapping her foot to the rhythm of her favorite songs. She cherished nature and found solace in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Long Beach Island and even her backyard often connecting with her surroundings during her time outdoors.

Preceded in death by her parents Alfred O. Smith and Violet Alberta Cressman and her siblings Joyce Elaine Healy, Barbara Joan Santee, and brother Alfred Smith. Mary is survived by her sisters Marilyn Smith Balaban and Judith Smith Brosey, brothers-in-law Philip Balaban and Greg Brosey, and numerous nieces and nephews who adored their Aunt Mary.

Mary Ellen Smith will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her students, her artistic spirit, her love of nature, and her generous heart that always sought to help others. Mary's legacy of kindness, creativity and commitment to education will live on in the hearts of those she touched. 

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at 11:00 AM, at Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home, 9529 Bustleton Ave., Phila., PA 19115.
