Mary Konchak Obituary

Mary Konchak, wife of the late Doctor John Konchak, died Friday, September 18, 2020.

Mary J. Konchak nee Bonchak was born August 31, 1919 to John and Maria Bonchak nee Selecka.

Born at home, her mother was cared for by a midwife and developed complications from which she died when Mary was less than two weeks old.  Fortunately, a neighbor who had never met Mary’s parents, Maria Maksemchuk, had recently had a baby and nursed Mary along with her own child until she was old enough to live with her Aunt Anna Kadubec  in the Allentown area. When Mary was in the second grade, she came back to Philadelphia to live with her Aunt Victoria Semanchuk.  It was then that Mary first learned to speak English and attended school, graduating from South Philadelphia High School for Girls.  Mary married her husband John Konchak in 1948 and had three children, Lynn Giljahn ( Jack), Peter ( Karen) and John.  When her husband died suddenly in 1968 Mary was faced with raising three school aged children on her own which she did with extreme devotion and affection Besides her children Mary is survived by six grandsons Matthew and Andrew Giljahn, Peter, Alex and Nathan Konchak and John Konchak.

Her viewing will be held on Saturday at 9 AM at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral.  Requiem Liturgy will be celebrated at 9:30 AM with Requiem Services following.  Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery.
