Mariamma Mathai was born on September 27, 1945, to the late Sosamma Varughese and Thomas Varughese. She was one of six children in a loving and God-fearing family. Their family home was in Kumbanad, Pathanamthitta.
She grew up with five siblings, many cousins, aunts, uncles and other loving family. She was a strong believer in God who loved the Lord from a very young age. On May 13, 1971, she married Mathai Thomas and was blessed with three daughters. After marriage, they traveled throughout India due to her husband's job with the Air Force. After his retirement, they established a home in Pullad. She was a homemaker while her husband worked throughout India and the Middle East.
In 1993, Mariamma and her young family migrated to the United States. There, they started their new life in Bergenfield, NJ before moving to Hackensack, NJ. She was fortunate to become a grandmother of eight grandchildren. She was very involved in their lives and dedicated herself to nurturing all of them.
She was always family-oriented. She enjoyed time outside, walking and gardening. Additionally, she loved to sing, pray, and experiment in the kitchen. She was very sociable and friendly with people; she loved having guests and engaging with younger ones. She was always the first to put her hand out for people in need because of her empathetic nature.
Mariamma is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Mathai Thomas, and their three children Maybel, Maybile, and Maybee along with their husbands Thomas Chandy, Aji John, and Oommen Daniel. She was proud to be called Ammachi by her eight grandchildren: Melissa, Merin, Eleena, Shawn, Megan, Ashley, Joshua, and Sarah.
