Maria Lukasewicz Plachta died on August 19, 2022 at the age of 96.
Maria was born on February 16, 1926 in Przomyal, Ukraine. She left Ukraine for Austria at the age of 16 after the death of her mother. She met and married her husband, Roman, at the Vallach Refugee Camp in Austria where their son Walter was born in 1947.
The family came to the United States in November 1950. After living in Scranton for a year, they moved to Philadelphia. Maria worked at Hygrades Foods as a meat packer and then later at M & M Company as a seamstress until she retired.
She was a member of UNWLA. She and Roman ran the kitchen at Tryzub Sports Club for several years; she was active at the Ukrainian Education and Cultural Center and sang in the church choir at Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church.
She is predeceased by her parents, Anastasia (Bratkowaka) and Ivan Lukasewicz, her husband Roman and her daughter Irene.
She is survived by her son Walter (Marie), her grandchildren: Christopher (Ivanna) and Katrina (Michael); and her great-grandchildren, Julia and Bohdan.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Friday at 9 AM at Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church. Requiem Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 AM. Burial will follow at Lawnview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Maria's memory may be made to the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center to be used towards relief efforts in Ukraine.
