Maria Ostapowycz Obituary

Maria Ostapowycz passed away peacefully on Monday, March 31, 2025 while she was sleeping.  She was the beloved wife of the late Ewhen.  Mother of the late Christine Ftomyn.  Mother-In-Law to Stefan Ftomyn.  Grandmother to Sonia Langdon (Brian), Vera Hood (Shawn), and Stefan Ftomyn.  Great Grandmother to Shawn Hood, Kellan Langdon, Alexander Hood, and Kira Langdon.  She is also survived by her nephew John Kalitan (Marlyn), her great niece Kim Greenberg (Adam), and great, great niece Brooke Greenberg.  She is predeceased by her parents Iwan and Kateryna Kalitan, sister Anna Ihnatiuk, brother-in-law Iwan Ihnatiuk, niece Irene Ihnatiuk, and nephew Roman Ihnatiuk.

Maria was born on September 5th, 1929 in the village of Serdytsya, Ukraine. During World War II, Maria's family fled Ukraine to avoid Soviet advances and were displaced to Germany where they became forced laborers. When the war ended, Maria's family migrated to the US on May 4th, 1949 on the former WWII Troop ship, Marine Jumper.  Maria worked with her family on a farm in Virginia for a short while then relocated to Philadelphia where she worked as a seamstress for automobile seats.  She married Ewhen and raised their daughter Christine.

She was an active member of St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church until its closing.  Later in life, Maria worked at Mrs. Paul's as a line worker.  She enjoyed cooking traditional Ukrainian food and passing along her recipes to family.  In her final years of life, Maria moved to an assisted living facility in New Jersey where she could be closer to her granddaughters and great grandchildren.  Her family loves her and will deeply miss her.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Wednesday at 9:30 AM at Annunciation BVM Ukrainian Catholic Church.  Requiem Services will be sung at 10:30 AM.  Burial will follow at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.

At Maria's request, please refrain from sending flowers; her preference was that donations to her church, Annunciation BVM Ukrainian Catholic Church, be made instead.
