Maria Karaba of Glenside, PA and formerly of Philadelphia, died Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at her residence. She was 96.
Born in Tuzyliw, Ukraine, she emigrated to the United States after World War II with her husband Petro and their children, Anna and Paul; they arrived in New York on Nov 14, 1950 with their destination being Baltimore, Maryland. Their sponsorship was through the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee (UUARC). They eventually moved to Philadelphia where they joined the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish.
Maria was a seamstress for many years for a clothing manufacturer before retiring.
Maria's husband died in 1966, leaving her to raise her four children; Anna was 20, Paul was 17, Eugene was 12 and Michael was just 6 months old when their father died.
She is survived by her son Michael and his wife Amy; her grandchildren: Peter, Michael, Alex, Kristopher and Lesha; two greatgrandchildren, Jackson Carter and Cambrie Gene; and her daughter-in-law Sharon Karaba. She is predeceased by her husband Petro, her daughter Anne and her sons, Eugene and Paul.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Friday at 9 AM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Requiem Services will be sung at 10 AM. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Elkins Park, PA.
