Maria Huk, a longtime resident of the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, died peacefully on Friday November 15th 2024. She was 87.
Maria was born in Western Ukraine on February 3, 1937 to Joachim and Anastasia Andrejko. One of nine siblings, Maria endured the German occupation of Ukraine during World War II. As a young girl, Maria and her mother fled to the United States to start a new life.
In 1957, Maria married Joseph Huk, and together than had two children, John Joseph Huk (Joan) and Luba Janjanin (Branko). Sadly, Joseph died in 1965 leaving Maria to raise her children alone. To support her family, Maria worked at Boekel Scientific in the manufacturing plant where she remained for over 30 years until her retirement.
Maria was the beloved grandmother of Brian Janjanin, Matthew Huk (Julie), Christopher Huk and Anna Huk. Maria loved Chinese food, strawberry shortcake, going to mass, and watching the Golden Girls. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and enjoyed a good story with a happy ending. Maria had a strong faith in God and was a devoted member of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Northern Liberties for many years. Though she lived in the U.S. for most of her life, Maria had a deep love and devotion to Ukraine.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Wednesday at 9 AM at the Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home. Requiem Services will be sung at 10 AM. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
