Maria Charles Obituary

Maria Marcella Charles, a longtime resident of Marlton, NJ, died at her residence on Saturday, September 6, 2025.  She was 95.  

Born in Matcha, Romania, she was a daughter of the late Ioan and Elena (Irimia) Pohrib.   Maria was a graduate of the University of Bucharest and taught the Romanian and French languages to high school classes.

In 1980, she fled to Israel to escape communism; she remained there for five years before coming to Philadelphia to rejoin her church community.  She married Arthur Charles in 1989.  

For many years, Maria volunteered with the Sisters of St. Joseph at their soup kitchen.

She is survived by her son Mircea Tufescu and her grandsons.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Monday at 6 PM at the Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home.  Panakhyda Prayers will be sung at 7 PM.  Her funeral will be held on Tuesday at Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church at 10 AM with Requiem Services beginning at 10:30 AM.  Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
