Lewis S. Taylor

Dr. Lewis Sheldon Taylor of Philadelphia passed away in his home on November 7, 2021 while surrounded by family.  He was 97 years old.

Lewis was a devoted husband to his wife Irene (nee Gaenzle) for over 60 years.  He was a strong, caring presence to his children, Janet Taylor (late), Paul Taylor, and Patricia Lowry.  He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Samantha and Andrew Lowry, and by extended family members and many friends.

Lewis grew up in rural Susquehanna County, PA.  He left this area to enlist in the army during WWII, "because it was the right thing to do".  He served for three years, in both the European and Pacific theaters.  After an honorable discharge, he received his bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and began working in civil service in White Plains, NY.  It was there that he met and married Irene.

Lewis and Irene moved to Minnesota where he pursued his master's degree, and later to Philadelphia where he was employed by the city for 25 years, primarily as Personnel Director.  He was also an arbiter and had late night negotiations between union and city officials.  He received his Doctorate in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania.  After leaving city employment, he formed his own consulting agency called Customized Management Services.  He also taught political science at Penn and St. Joseph's Universities.

Lew's first love was his family, followed by barbershop singing which he participated in for over 60 years.  He was an active member of Somerton United Methodist Church for over 50 years and served on several boards.  He had a passion for gardening, was an active member of the American Rose Society.  He tended his rose garden until his last year of life.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2021, in the chapel of Somerton United Methodist Church, 13073 Bustleton Ave., Philadelphia, PA.  There will be time for visitation with family at 10:00AM, followed by a formal service at 11AM.
