Kathryn Reiss Wray Hutchison of Philadelphia passed away after a brief illness on January 31, 2021, at the age of 94. She was at home, surrounded by her loving family. Kathryn, born on December 6, 1926 was the daughter of William and Kathryn Wray.
Kathryn grew up in West Philadelphia, and after graduating from high school during WWII, went to work at a local bank during the day, but five nights a week she could be found at the Nixon Ballroom, dancing with servicemen on leave and helping them write letters home. It was there she met the love of her life, Horace “Jim” Cook Hutchison. Kathryn and Jim married in 1948 and danced their way together through life for the next 49 years until Jim’s passing. Together they raised 4 children, attended Somerton United Methodist Church, established a warm and welcoming home, cultivated dozens of friendships, and touched and inspired everyone they met.
Loving her family and enjoying life were Kathryn’s specialty. Kathryn made individual time for each of her grandchildren through the years, taking them to the theater, live music, movie dates or just staying over at her house with hot chocolate and card playing. She jumped at any travel opportunities with friends and family, filled her home with music, played Canasta for over 50 years with friends, and took care of anyone who happened to cross her path, whether you mowed her lawn, fixed her car or plowed her driveway. No one left empty-handed. When we think about life achievements, her dance card was filled.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and her brother, William Wray, Jr. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Bruce and Lisa Hutchison of Honesdale, Susan and Michael Hutchinson of Newtown, Claire and Irvin Snyder of Cherry Hill, NJ, and Leah and Mark Pacitto of Harleysville. Kathryn is survived by 10 grandchildren, Michael, Lisa, Rachel, Meredith, Jenna, Hannah, Shaun, Glenn, Julie, and James, and 21 great-grandchildren.
A private burial gathering for family will take place at an undetermined time.
