Kataryna Kowalczuk died on July 28, 2022 at the age of 86.
Kataryna was born on September 25, 1935 in the village of Berlohy, in the Kalush region of Ukraine. At the end of WWII, Kataryna along with her mother, stepfather and half-sister left Enkebach, Germany and immigrated to the United States on March 2, 1952.
Once in America, she settled with her family in Philadelphia. Kataryna enjoyed engaging in various activities within the Ukrainian community. She met her future husband Mykola at a church picnic and they were later married on March 11, 1956. Their son Bohdan was born in 1956 and daughter Olga in 1962. Once her children were of school age, Kataryna found employment at Pilling Company where she manufactured surgical instruments. She retired in April 1998.
Kataryna enjoyed gardening, and anyone who knew her would say she had quite the ‘green thumb’. She enjoyed growing all types of plants and flowers, especially roses. She attended the Philadelphia Flower show annually, where she would always buy an African violet to add to her collection. Kataryna was very talented in the kitchen where she loved cooking for family and friends.
Her greatest joy were her granddaughters, Larissa and Kyra. Holiday cooking with her daughter and granddaughters, especially at Christmas time was very important to her. This was her way of preserving her Ukrainian heritage and traditions.
Kataryna is predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Mykola (Nick), and her son Bohdan (Bo).
She is survived by her daughter Olga and her husband Alexander, granddaughter Larissa and her husband Joseph, and granddaughter Kyra.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Thursday, August 4, 2022 at 9 AM at St Anne’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. Requiem Services will be celebrated at 10 AM. Burial will follow at St Mary’s Cemetery, Elkins Park PA.
