Joseph F. Bowden, a retired City of Philadelphia Fire Fighter, died Friday, January 25, 2019, after a short illness.
The son of the late Joseph F. Bowden, Sr. and Catherine Moran Bowden, he was born in Pottsville, PA. His family moved to Philadelphia when Joe was 6 years old. He was a graduate of North Catholic High School; while working as a truck driver for Ontario Paper Stock Company, Joe was drafted into the US Army in 1951. He served in Italy and Germany as part of the 68th MP Company and was discharged as a Private First Class in 1953.
Joe was a firefighter for 35 years, serving most of his time with Engine 52. After leaving the fire department, he joined PennDot and worked with road maintenance crews for 10 years before retiring.
Joe lost his beloved wife Dolores Izzi Bowden in 2017 (they had been married for 59 years) and is survived by his daughter Joanne Bowden and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives, friends and members of Philadelphia Firefighters Union Local 22 are invited to his viewing at 9 AM on Wednesday at Our Lady of Consolation Roman Catholic Church. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Hulmeville, PA.
