John Szweda, a resident of the Burlhome section of Philadelphia since 1978, died Tuesday, June 2, 2026. He was 99.
Born in Rivne, Ukraine, John was a son of the late Mychajlo and Kataryna Moletzska Szweda. He emigrated to the United States in 1948 and settled in Philadelphia. He married Maria Zailo at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in 1964. He worked for Septa and later for the Philadelphia Inquirer before retiring.
He was a huge fan of professional wrestling and even converted his wife into watching the matches on TV.
He is survived by his children: Pete Szweda and his wife Gina; John Szweda and his wife Evonne; and Michael Szweda; his grandchildren: Nicholas Szweda (Gina ), Katie Haft (Jordan), Michael Szweda (Ashley), Billy Szweda, Marissa Everman (Anthony) and Christina Weston 'Lollipop' (Jose); and his Great-grandchildren: Skyler Haft, Riley Haft, Danny Haft, Mikey Szweda, Abbie Szweda, AJ Miller, Jayden Miller Szweda, Mia Burrows, AJ Everman, Jaxon Everman, Addison Everman and Ellie Everman.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Monday at 10 AM at the Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home. Parastas Prayers will be sung at 11 AM. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
