Jaroslaw "Jerry" Makar passed away unexpectedly on April 27, 2015 at the age of 66.
Born in Trier, Germany, Jaroslaw was the beloved son of Wasyl and the late Kateryna (nee Sopel) Makar.
Jaroslaw attended North Catholic High School in Philadelphia where he excelled in athletics, most notably baseball. His skills on the field caught the attention of the St. Louis Cardinals who scouted him for their organization. Unfortunately, his dream of playing professional baseball was halted by the draft. Jaroslaw enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served with distinction in Okinawa and Vietnam. Upon his honorable discharge, Jaroslaw attended and graduated from La Salle University with a degree in Business.
Along with a passion for professional baseball, Jaroslaw's interests included politics and golf. An avid golfer, he enjoyed traveling to various golf courses throughout the country always working on perfecting his game.
He was predeceased by his devoted companion of over 20 years, Margaret Ann Kelly. He was the dear brother of Danuta (Eugene) Sawicky, Bohdan Makar, Stephania (Francis) Flood, Peter Makar and the late Nicholas Makar; loving uncle of Michael (Dianna), Christina (Dorian), Nicole, Brett (Lina), Marissa and Jared.
Jaroslaw will also be greatly missed by Margaret Ann's children, Kandace and Kevin, and her grandchildren, Christian, Anthony, Cory and Kevin.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing on Tuesday (May 5, 2015) from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 830 N. Franklin St., Philadelphia, PA. Panakhyda prayer service at 10:30 AM with Requiem Liturgy to be celebrated at 10:45 AM. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Elkins Park, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 833 N. Franklin St., Philadelphia, PA 19123.
