She married Roman Nicholas Shchuka in 1962 and together they raised three children: George, Maria and Adrian.
Irene was active in the Ukrainian community, in Plast (Ukrainian Scout Organization), and worked as a social worker supporting the elderly through the Ukrainian Educational & Cultural Center (VISTA program).

Irene was predeceased by her husband Roman, who died in 1979.  She leaves behind her three children - George, Maria, and Adrian with wife Karen, and their children Gabriel and Ariana.  She is also survived by her sister Lidia Buk, and Lidia’s children Askold with wife Ani, and Areta, as well as extended family and friends that grieve the loss of her love and friendship.
