Irene Shchuka was born on December 17, 1931, in Hiiche, Ukraine to Maria (Popowicz) and John Kenig. She fled Ukraine with her mother and sister during World War II, spending time in displaced persons camps in Germany, before immigrating to New York in 1949.
She married Roman Nicholas Shchuka in 1962 and together they raised three children: George, Maria and Adrian.
Irene was active in the Ukrainian community, in Plast (Ukrainian Scout Organization), and worked as a social worker supporting the elderly through the Ukrainian Educational & Cultural Center (VISTA program).
Irene was predeceased by her husband Roman, who died in 1979. She leaves behind her three children - George, Maria, and Adrian with wife Karen, and their children Gabriel and Ariana. She is also survived by her sister Lidia Buk, and Lidia’s children Askold with wife Ani, and Areta, as well as extended family and friends that grieve the loss of her love and friendship.
Family and friends are invited to Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church (Cayuga St, Philadelphia) on Saturday September 11, 2021 for viewing at 9:30 AM and Requiem Liturgy to be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow immediately after the liturgy at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery (Cedar Rd, Fox Chase).
