George F. Baer, Jr., a long time resident of Philadelphia, died Wednesday, January 22, 2025. He was 82.
Born in Kherson, Ukraine, George was the son of the late Elisabeth (nee Mischuryn) and George F. Baer, Sr. George's father died during World War II and in 1956 he emigrated along with his mother and sister to the United States, settling in North Philadelphia. He was a graduate of Roman Catholic High School and studied electronics at Temple University; while at Temple, he was drafted into the US Army in 1969 and served with the US Army Signal Corps (spending one year in Korea) before being discharged in 1970 with the rank of SP5. He later graduated from Temple University, earing a BS in Engineering. Immediately after graduation he joined United Engineers; he worked as a draftsman until his retirement.
George was a member of Ukrainian-American Veterans, Post 1 and Ukrainian-American Sports Club "Tryzub" where he consistently thumped the younger golfers over the years during Tryzub's annual golf outings.
He is survived by his sister Elvira (Ella) Trakimas, his niece Elizabeth Yordy and her children, Hailey and Gabriel.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Tuesday at 10 AM at the Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home. Requiem Services will be sung at 11 AM. Military Honors will be bestowed at 1 PM at Washington Crossing National Cemetery followed by committal prayers.
