Gary J. Bonfante of the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia died suddenly on Saturday, August 15, 2020. He was 66.
Born in Neptune, New Jersey, Gary was the son of Rose (Mecca) and the late Rosario Bonfante. Gary attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Grade School and Neptune High School. He studied and graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia and remained a Philadelphian for the rest of his life.
He worked in the labs at Episcopal Hospital and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. He was self taught in computers and started working in the IT department of Episcopal Hospital. After attending various training sessions to enhance his knowledge, he worked for several companies including Genesis and Comcast where he retired from in December 2019.
Gary married in 1991. He and Annette were married at Nativity Church in 1991 and shared 28 years together. Gary participated as a facilitator for the pre-Cana program for several years and was also a Eucharistic Minister.
Gary enjoyed skiing and bowling, but his passion was scouting. He achieved the rank of Life Scout. As an adult he filled many roles including: Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Unit Commissioner and Assistant Council Commissioner. He also participated in various scouting events. Gary was honored with the Scoutmaster's Key, Wood Badge Beads, District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver Award, Commissioner's Award of Excellence in Unit Service and District Commissioner's Service Award. He was also in the Order of the Arrow.
He is survived by his wife, Annette (Olesh) Bonfante, his daughter Cecilia Bonfante, his mother Rose Bonfante and his brothers, Michael and Steve (Rae); he is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Saturday at 9:30 AM at Nativity BVM Church; his Funeral Mass will begin at 11 AM. Interment will be private.
