Dr. Daria Jaroslava Fylypowycz Montero

Dr. Daria Montero has passed on to join her parents, Theodosij and Jaroslava Fylypowycz. Born in Lviv Ukraine during World War II, she and her parents spent 5 years in a displaced persons camp in Hallendorf, Germany before emigrating to the United States in 1950. She grew up in Philadelphia, where she attended Little Flower High School and then the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Montero earned her Ph.D. from U of P and went on to a long and distinguished career as a college professor in Spanish Literature, most recently as a tenured professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. She also published two books and numerous articles in her field of study and administered a student abroad program for John Jay College in Seville Spain.
A pet lover and mother to many cats in her lifetime, Dr. Montero retired in 2014 and spent the last years of her life living in Bethlehem PA, New York City, and most recently Wilton CT.
Dr. Montero is survived by her loving children, daughter Ana Maria Gallelli (Michael) Whitted of Wilton CT and son A. Andriy (Jessica) Montero of Bethlehem PA; her grandchildren Nicholas, Natalia, Sophia, Alexandra, Isabella, and Ryan; and many friends and colleagues, including Robert Paulson. She was pre-deceased by her beloved cousin, Dr. Christine Kusyk, of Mobile AL.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 10 AM at St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church. Requiem Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 AM. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
