Christine Kulchyckyj

  On December 9, 2022 Christina Kulchycky joined her husband of 63 years. She was 84 years old and is survived by her sons Dmytro-Roman, Bohdan and Elizabeth, and Yaro and Marta, and 10 grandchildren, Yaro, Hryko, Zenon, Maria, Bozhena, Vika, Dem'yan, Darij, Lukash, and Anya.
  The daughter of Gregory (Hryhorii) Luznycky and Nina Konoshinska, she was born in Lviv, Ukraine on March 14, 1938. After the family was forced to flee Ukraine to escape Stalin’s purges of Ukrainians in Halychyna before WWII, she spent her early childhood years living and studying in Gratz, Austria. After the end of WWII, the Luznycky family emigrated to the United States.

  Christine spent the majority of her life living in the Philadelphia area. She completed Mary's Villa Academy in Sloatsburg, NY and St. Joseph’s College where she earned her bachelors degree.  Upon graduation, she went on to teach English Literature in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools, first at Hallahan High School, the country's first all-girls diocesan Catholic High School and then later Roman Catholic High School, the first free diocesan Catholic High School for boys in the nation.
  In August 1959 Christine married her husband of 63 years, Bohdan W. Kulchyckyj. Together they raised three boys, Dmytro Roman, Bohdan (Danyo), and Yaropolk (Yaro) to cherish their Ukrainian heritage, identity, and traditions while at the same time respect and serve the United States and honor the opportunities offered in democratic and free society.
  Christine believed in living her life by example. She worked tirelessly as a schoolteacher during the day and wife and mother 24-7. On the weekends Christine and Bohdan worked relentlessly as community organizers creating institutions and organizations for Ukrainian-Americans in the Philadelphia area and in the U.S. In the 1960's, together they created a Saturday afternoon Ukrainian school in Philadelphia where they both taught for years. Christine taught Ukrainian Literature and Culture and Bohdan taught Ukrainian History.  During the 1960's and 1970's, Christine and her husband were active members of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America where they worked with the goal of uniting the Ukrainian-American community in the U.S.  Also, for decades she volunteered for the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organization. During the 1980's, Christine was elected to the Board of Directors of the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center (UECC) where she was the Head of the Finance Committee and worked tirelessly to raise money to pay-off UECC's mortgage.  In the 1990's, Christine was elected to the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee's Board of Directors and co-managed a USAID grant focused on developing small-business and micro-finance opportunities for orphanages in western Ukraine.
  However, what mattered most to Christine was family and her 10 grandchildren. To them, in their own words, Babcha was a strong independent woman who cared about everyone. She warmed their hearts and always gave the right advice for anything they needed. All the grandchildren saw her as inspiring portrayal of a women, strong and independent yet loving and caring. To the very end, she was their biggest fan, supporter, their North Star - always motivating and complimenting them.

  Повідомляємо громаду з сумною вісткою, що 9 грудня відійшла на Вічну Пам’ять Христина (з дому Лужницька) Кульчицька, довголітня вчителька, громадська діячка, любляча мама і бабця.
  Христя народилася 14 березня 1938 року в місті Львові і походила із священичої родини. Вона з родиною змушена була залишити Україну під час Другої світової війни. Останні роки війни родина провела в Ґраці (тоді під німецькою окупацією).
  До Америки приїхала на початку 1950 років. Спочатку жила в Нью-Йорку, а тоді родина перенеслася  до Філадельфії. Христя вчилась в Академії св. Василія на Факс Чейзі від 1950 по 1952, тоді переїхала до Академії Сестер Служебниць в Словцбурґу, НЙ. В 1960 році Христя отримала бакалаврат від St. Joseph’s College y Філядельфії.
  З 1960 по 1990 роки Христя була вчителькою при Hallahan High School і Roman Catholic High School.
  Як громадска діячка, в 1960-1970 роках, Христя була активном членом Українського Конгресового Комітету Америки (УККА) де вона працювала щоб зберігати з‘єднану українську громаду.
  У 1960-1980 роках Христя була вчителькою української культури і української літератури при суботній Нашій Українській Школі у Філядельфії.
  Від початку 1970 років і до 2014 року вона була членом Світової  Федерації Українських Жіночих  Організацій (СФУЖО) де вона теж була членом фінансової комісії, членом контрольної комісії, і була головою фінансової комісії Америки від 2003 до 2013 року.
  У 1980 - 1990 роках вона була головою фінансового комітету і вибрана у дирекції при Українському Освітньо-Культурному центрі у Філядельфії.
  У 1990-2000 роках Христя була на екзекутиві дирекції Злученого Українського Американського Допомогового Комітету (ЗУДАКу) і працювала над ґрантом для українського уряду для допомоги сиротинцям в Україні.
  Христя була заміжня з Богданом Кульчицьким 63 роки, котрий сам відійшов на вічну пам’ять у грудні 2021 року. Христя лишає трьох синів: Дмитра-Романа, Богдана з дружиною Єлизаветою, і Ярка із дружиною Мартою і 10 внуків.
  Похорон відбувся 16 грудня.  Родина збирає датки в імені Христини Кульчицької. Датки будуть вживані для українських студенток-дівчат, щоб вони мали доступ до вищої освіти при УКУ.
