Bishop Basil H. Losten

Bishop Basil Harry Losten, a revered figure in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2024, in Stamford, Connecticut, after a brief illness. He was 94 years old. At the time of his passing, he was Bishop Emeritus of the Ukrainian Catholic Diocese of Stamford, a role he held with grace and devotion until his final days. 

Born in Chesapeake City, Maryland, on May 11, 1930, a son of the late Ivan Losten and Julia Petryshyn Losten, Basil Losten embarked on a life of faith and service that began with his early education at St. Basil School in Philadelphia.  His journey into the priesthood was marked by years of dedicated study, first at the Ukrainian Catholic Seminary in Stamford and later at St. Basil College, where he earned a bachelor of arts in philosophy.  His theological education culminated in a graduate degree from the Catholic University of America in 1957.

Basil Losten was ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 1957, by Bishop Constantine Bohachevsky.  His initial assignments saw him serve the Philadelphia Archdiocese as chancery secretary and in various parishes across the city.  In 1962, his leadership and loyalty were acknowledged when he was appointed personal secretary to Archbishop-Metropolitan Ambrose Senyshyn.

In 1968, Pope Paul VI recognized his contributions by elevating him to the rank of papal chamberlain. On March 23, 1971, he was nominated to the episcopacy, and on May 25 of that year, he was consecrated as auxiliary bishop, along with the Reverend John Stock, of the Ukrainian Archdiocese of Philadelphia by Archbishop Ambrose Senyshyn of Philadelphia alongise Bishop Jaroslav Gabro of Chicago and Bishop Michael Joseph Dudyk.  He continued to serve with distinction, later being appointed apostolic administrator of the diocese in 1976 during the declining health of Archbishop-Metropolitan Senyshyn.  On September 20, 1977, he was appointed diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Stamford.

Since 1992, he had been an active member of the Kyiv Study Group on Ecumenism and since 1995, a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.  He was also a member of the United States Conference of Bishops.

In accordance with Canon 210 of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, upon reaching a certain age, Basil Losten submitted his resignation to the Holy Father, Benedict XVI, which was accepted on January 3, 2006.

With the financial assistance of Bishop Vasyl Losten and on the occasion of the Millennium of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine, the Chapel of St. Princess Olha was opened in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

On August 21, 2007, President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko awarded Bishop Vasyl Losten the Order of Merit III degree “for his significant personal contribution to strengthening the authority of Ukraine in the world, popularizing its historical and modern achievements, and on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of Ukraine's independence.”

On May 25th, 2021, Eparchial clergy and religious, and close friends, including Metropolitan-Archbishop Borys Gudziak and Bishop Paul Chomnycky, OSBM, gathered in St. Basil Seminary to celebrate a very special event – the Golden Anniversary of Consecration as Bishop of Most Rev. Basil H. Losten.  On this day, 50 years ago, Msgr. Basil H. Losten was elevated to the episcopacy through the imposition of hands of Most Rev. Ambrose Senyshyn, Metropolitan-Archbishop of Philadelphia (1961-1976).

During his toast to Bishop Basil, Archbishop Gudziak recalled some of the major accomplishments of the jubilarian over his five decades of service:

“Bishop Basil makes us proud! In the 1960s and 70s Bishop Basil spearheaded the construction of 240 apartments extending hospitality to hundreds of low-income Ukrainian, African, Asian, and Latino American senior citizens - in fact, to all seniors in need. Today, as the country struggles to bring harmony among peoples and races, the Ascension Manor towers, are a shining witness to how our Ukrainian Catholic community, in a Christ-like manner, extends a hand to our surroundings and offers hospitality and serves the needy and minorities in our neighborhoods.

Bishop Basil shared the good news about God’s graces in our Church, past and present! During the 1980s Bishop Basil led a campaign to bring the plight of the underground Church in Ukraine to the attention of the nation and the world. The 1988 celebration of Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine was brought to a broad global audience. Bishops Basil’s leadership was seminal for these efforts. Millions of visitors to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome for centuries will bow and pray before the mosaic icons of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha that Bishop Basil sponsored.

Bishop Basil led us into the future! Bishop Basil helped our Church in Ukraine get off its knees in the 1990s and in the 2000s left the Stamford Eparchy with a strong, youthful presbyterate, the most diverse in our Church. The Eparchy and St. Basil’s Seminary continue to thrive.”

Archbishop Borys also wrote, upon hearing of Bishop Losten's death: 

Beginning retirement in the 2010s, he was always present and ready to help. Bishop Losten represented a continuity among generations of faith living communion in Christ. Bishop Basil’s endowment of a Ukrainian Church Studies program at the Catholic University of America will foster the understanding of the life and pastoral service of our Church in America and the world. He was a generous benefactor of the Ukrainian Catholic University and of countless ecclesial and civic causes.

In the 2020s, as the senior hierarch in our Church’s Synod of Bishops, Bishop Basil served as a trusted advisor to Patriarch Sviatoslav at a time of war, humanitarian crisis, pandemic, and critical spiritual and social need.

Bishop Basil’s legacy will serve the Stamford Eparchy, our Metropolia, and the global Ukrainian Catholic Church for many years to come. It is our vocation to continue the witness to the Gospel as Ukrainian Catholics in America.

May the Lord grant Bishop Basil eternal rest in the place of light, joy, and peace where there is no pain, sorrow nor mourning!

Bishop Basil is survived by many nieces and nephews.  Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his siblings: Michael, Edward, John, Nicholas, Stephen, Stella Zukowsky, Mary Humen and Ann.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Basil Ukrainian Catholic Seminary for the education of priests.

Bishop Losten was admired throughout his career for his unwavering dedication to his faith, leadership, and tireless service to the Ukrainian Catholic community. Losten’s impact on clergy and laity alike will be remembered for generations.

Упокоївся владика-емерит Василь Лостен

Співчуття від духовенства, монашества та вірних Філадельфійської Архиєпархії

Філадельфійська Архиєпархія та вся наша Митрополія в США глибоко сумують через відхід владики Василя Лостена, який 67 років тому був рукоположений на священника Архиєпархії, а протягом останніх 53 років служив єпископом нашої Митрополії. Висловлюємо щирі співчуття Родині Покійного, владиці Павлу Хомницькому та всій Стемфордській єпархії.

Життя владики Василя Лостена, сповнене відданості Богові та Церкві, було багатим на новаторські проєкти в церковній та громадській сферах. Як священник і єпископ, він невтомно виконував своє пастирське служіння через особисту присутність і залученість. Священники, парафії, організації та окремі члени громади завжди могли покладатися на його підтримку в часи духовних, особистих чи громадських криз. Його присутність і щедрість були незмінними. Ініціатива та прозорливість владики Василя, що виявилися десятиліття тому, залишаються актуальними і сьогодні.

У 1960-70-х роках владика Василь очолив проєкт будівництва 240 квартир, що стали домівкою для сотень малозабезпечених літніх людей — українців, афроамериканців, азіатів та латиноамериканців. Сьогодні, коли наша країна прагне досягти гармонії між народами та расами, Ascension Manor є яскравим свідченням того, як українська католицька громада може простягнути руку допомоги своїм сусідам.

У 1980-х роках владика Василь очолив кампанію, яка привернула увагу США та всього світу до переслідуваної підпільної Церкви в Україні. Відзначення 1000-річчя Хрещення Руси-України в 1988 році стало справді масовим і визначним, і його провід варто відзначити. Мільйони відвідувачів базиліки Святого Петра в Римі протягом століть будуть молитися перед мозаїками святих Володимира та Ольги, які стали можливими завдяки зусиллям владики Василя.

Владика Василь допоміг нашій Церкві в Україні піднятися з колін у 1990-х роках, а в 2000-х роках залишив Стемфордську єпархію зі сильним та молодим клиром.

Навіть після виходу на емеритуру він завжди був поруч і готовий допомогти. Владика Лостен був сполучною ланкою між поколіннями віри, які жили в єдності у Христі. Заснована ним програма досліджень Української Церкви в Католицькому університеті Америки буде сприяти кращому розумінню життя та пастирського служіння нашої Церкви в Америці та світі. Він був щедрим благодійником Українського католицького університету та багатьох церковних і громадських ініціатив.

У 2020-х роках, як старший єрарх Синоду єпископів нашої Церкви, владика Василь був радником Патріарха Святослава в періоди війни, гуманітарної кризи, пандемії та важливих духовних і соціальних викликів.

Духовна спадщина владики Василя збагачуватиме Стемфордську єпархію, нашу Митрополію та глобальну Українську Католицьку Церкву протягом багатьох років. Нашим покликанням як українських католиків в Америці є продовження свідчення Євангелія.

Нехай Господь дарує владиці Василю вічний спокій у місці світлому, квітучому й мирному, де немає болю, печалі чи зітхання!
