On January 31, 2022, Bernie passed away at 75 years old, born to his parents Bernard and Catherine O’Donnell who were Irish immigrants. He was a Vietnam Veteran who served in the United States Navy and the United States Army. He was employed by the City of Philadelphia Sheriff‘s Department for 38 years.
He married his wife Lidia (née Prokopyschyn) of 53 years in 1968. When not wearing his Sheriff’s uniform, you would find him sporting his khaki safari shirts and blue jeans and more than likely holding a can of coca cola. Although quiet and humble, his quick wit and sharp sense of humor would lighten the worst situations and stayed with him till his last breath. Those who knew him speak mostly of his generosity and willingness to help with whatever he could. A great provider, protector, problem solver, role model and mentor to his family.
He passed at home with his family by his side after a long battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed, forever remembered and eternally loved; by his wife Lidia (née Prokopyschyn) his daughters, Sharon Devanney (Steve), Kelly Meehan (John), Megan Cunningham (Sean deceased) and Erin Cummiskey (Brian) also by his many grandchildren April, Amber, Candace, Marissa, John, Nikki, Stephanie, Ciara, Stephen, Carter, Kelsey and his great-grandchildren Marlee, Blake and Harley. He is preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Catherine (née Allen) O’Donnell and his sister Mary Elizabeth Jefferys (née O’Donnell).
Services for Bernie will be private.
