ANNA SUHY (nee Hirol), age 99, of Philadelphia, passed away on February 21, 2021 at Samaritan Hospice in Mt. Holly, NJ. She was the beloved wife of the late Raymond Suhy (Roman Suchyj) and devoted mother of sons George, of Medford, NJ and Andrew, of Ann Arbor, MI.
Anna was born in 1921, the youngest of four children, in a small town near Kiev, Ukraine. In the 1930s she and her parents were forced from their own farm to a collective farm by the Soviets and later, during World War II, were taken by the Nazis to a forced labor camp in Germany, until the camp was liberated by the U.S. Army. After the war she and her husband were married in Germany in 1947 and emigrated to the United States in 1949, living in New York and Pittsburgh and then settling in Philadelphia, where her husband established a dental practice.
After her two children were raised Anna worked as a bookkeeper for Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance in Philadelphia for 25 years. She was active in the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America and the Senior Citizens’ Club at the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center.
Family and friends are invited to her Funeral Liturgy at Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church on Friday, February 26 at 11 A.M. Internment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Elkins Park, PA.
