Anna M. Miller, a resident of Philadelphia, died Friday, October 4, 2019, after a short illness. She was 94.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Anna was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Anna Hayduk Mazur. She attended and graduated high school in Pittsburgh and moved to Washington, DC with her sisters in 1943 to sell War Bonds. While in Washington, she worked for the Bell Telephone Company and the Walter Reed Hospital; she met her future husband, Gerlous Ganes Miller ('Rip') at a USO dance while he was serving in the US Navy. The two were married in 1949 in Annapolis, Maryland. While Rip served in the Navy during the Korean War, Anna moved to Philadelphia (where their son James was born in 1951) until his return. After the Korean War, Rip was assigned as a military attache' to Rome, Italy where the family lived for three years; while in Rome, they had an audience with Pope Pius XII. A true Navy wife, she lived in Newport News, VA; Monterey, CA and Norfolk, VA. When Rip retired from the Navy in Oakland, CA, they moved back to Norfolk until they separated and later divorced.
Anna would move back to Philadelphia; she lived in Olney for a number of years before moved to Northeast Philadelphia and worked as a licensed practical nurse for 17 years at Albert Einstein Medical Center before retiring.
Anna is predeceased by her son James; her siblings: Frances Katamay, Sylvester Mazur, Josephine Costa, Bohdan Mazur and Walter Mazur. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Anna's graveside services will be held on Thursday at 2 PM at St. Mary Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Elkins Park, PA.
