Alexandra Doroshenko of Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 15, 2020 at the age of 93.
She is predeceased by her parents Nestor and Paraskevia, her beloved husband Wasyl, daughter Luba and son Taras. She was a loving mother of Vera (late Anatole) Shapowalenko, Chrystyna (Bohdan) Standrytchuk, George (Lorraine), Roman (Clarie), Alexander and Mark (Christine). Grandmother to 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Alexandra was born on March 4, 1927 in Hostiw, Tlumacz region, Ukraine, to Nestor and Paraskewia (Stelmaszczuk) Stangrytczuk. When she was 15, she was taken to Germany for forced labor on a dairy farm. After the war, she went to Mittenwald, Germany where she met her husband, Wasyl. They married on March 25, 1947. In 1949, they were sponsored by her Uncle, Reverend Antony Stangry and traveled to the U.S. with their daughter Vera and settled in Northern Liberties.
Alexandra worked for Goldberg Candy Co., then went to work as a weaver at Whitaker and Sons Inc. Later, she assisted her husband at the St Basil Orphanage Printing Shop where her husband was a printer. Alexandra and Wasyl continued printing in their own printing shop until they retired.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, embroidery and most of all ballroom dancing with her beloved Wasyl of 63 years. She also enjoyed hosting all holidays and special occasions with her large family at their home.
Her body will be laid to rest with her husband at Lawnview Cemetery in Rockledge, PA.
Interment will be private. A memorial service and celebration will be scheduled at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations in her memory maybe sent to Sisters of St. Basil the Great or to the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center (UECC).
