Alexander (Alex) Kobasa, 99, peacefully fell asleep in the Lord on Thursday the 20th of January at his home in Lansdale, PA.
Beloved husband of the late Helen (Prounchick) Kobasa for 69 years and devoted father to Alexis Puglia (David) and Martha Casassa (John). Alexander was also the dear “Pop-Pop” of Lauren Bruno (William), Matthew Puglia (Rebecca) and John Casassa, Jr. On June 8, 2021, he became “Great Grand Pop-Pop” to his first Great-Grandchild Penelope (Poppy) Bruno who brought him great joy. He was preceded in death by his brothers Daniel, William, and Walter. He is also survived by multiple loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Alex was born in Philadelphia on April 26,1922, but the family soon relocated to Lansdale where he became a lifelong resident. He was a 1940 graduate of Lansdale High School where he excelled in track and cross country and held the 1939 Bux-Mont Cross Country Record.
Alex worked several years with his brothers at their ESSO Gas Station. Then in 1960 he joined the Lansdale Post Office as a Letter Carrier until his retirement. He continued as a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and in 2018 was presented the Gold Card commemorating his 50 years of loyal membership.
He was a longtime member of St. Michael the Archangel Russian Orthodox Church and was active in the 49er’s Social Club. He often lent his exceptional handyman skills to projects throughout the church and loved participating in the annual Russian Festival. For many years he could be found flipping potato pancakes and making funnel cakes in a booth outside with his fellow parishioners.
In addition to always being available as the family and neighborhood “Mr. Fix-It,” Alex also volunteered his time in the Lansdale community. He ran a dinner program for Montgomery County ARC providing a chance for local residents with intellectual disabilities to socialize and learn kitchen skills. He also occasionally served as a chaperone for Special Olympics Athletes. For his efforts, he was awarded the Montgomery County ARC Community Service Award in 1987.
Alex’s happiest moments always involved family. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Helen, many fun family vacations (especially to Brigantine Island), proudly attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities, and family celebrations where he was surrounded by those he loved.
His final years were supported by his dedicated, loving, long-term caregivers and Caring Hospice.
Relatives and friends are invited to Alex's viewing on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at 10 AM at St. Michael the Archangel Russian Orthodox Church. Requiem Services will be sung at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Alexander’s name to St. Michael the Archangel Russian Orthodox Church.
