It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Eugen “Genyk” Loza on May 17, 2018, at the age of 94, husband to Krystyna (Bednarek).
Eugen and Pauline Loza (Paloschuk) were loving parents to Eugene (Vera Pryszlak), Fr. Michael (Oksana Hrabowecky), +Joseph, Anastasia and Paul (Diane Gradel). Eugen was a proud Dido to Marianka (Filip Sobotka), Markian (Sarah Syer), Andrea, Julia, Allie, +Timothy, Jonathan, Gabriel, +Andrew, Bella and Nicholas.
Eugen was born on May 8, 1924, into the family of Michael and Anastasia (Baran) in the village of Kosienice, Ukraine. During World War II, at the age of 15, Eugen was taken as a forced laborer (“Ostarbeiter“) to Germany. He subsequently emigrated to the United States where he married Pauline Paloschuk in 1959; they successfully raised 4 children over 30 years.
Eugen was actively involved in the Philadelphia Ukrainian community & Ukrainian Catholic church for over 60 years. Since 2008, Eugen suffered from dementia; however his love of family, church and Ukraine never faded. He was a kind and simple man, with a strong work ethic, a sense of humor and compassion for others, including stray dogs and orphaned squirrels, which he often rescued and fed on the family front porch on Warnock Street in the Logan section of Philadelphia.
Visitation will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, May 24th, at St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church with a Requiem Liturgy celebrated at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Lawnview Cemetery in Rockledge, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the “Ukrainian American Sport Center - Tryzub” or to St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church – “Building Fund” would be appreciated.
