Doctor Roman Dykyj, Sr.

It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Roman Dykyj, Sr., a retired physician, announces his passing on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at the age of 95.

Roman was born in Chorosno, Ukraine, on August 8, 1923, the son  of the late Iwan and Anna (Melnyk) Dykyj. He graduated gymnasium in 1943 at Lemberg, and attended seminary for a brief period, but decided to turn his attention to dentistry. Roman married his beloved Eugenia Zacharczuk (deceased) in 1946, and their first son, Roman was born in 1949. He earned a doctoral degree in dentistry from Ludwig-Maximillian University in October 1949, and the family immigrated to Philadelphia in 1951, when he decided to pursue his true passion of medicine and returned to Germany to earn his medical degree in 1958. After returning to Philadelphia to complete his internship, their second son, Jaroslav, was born in 1961. Dr. Dykyj opened a private practice on Broad Street and began serving the Ukrainian community with such gentle care and compassion that made him well known. He then moved the practice to the Northeast, continuing to serve the community in partnership with his eldest son, until his retirement in 2003.

He will be lovingly remembered by his sons: Dr. Roman Dykyj and his wife Daria, and Jaroslav Dykyj and his wife Patricia; his grandchildren: Andrea (Jimmy), Roman Andrew, Julia and Stephanie; his brother-in-law Borys Zacharczuk and sister-in-law Zwen Zacharczuk and many nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 71 years, Eugenia.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday at 9 AM at Annunciation BVM Ukrainian Catholic Church, Melrose Park, PA.  Panahyda prayers will be sung at 9:45 AM.  Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 AM.  Burial will follow at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, South Bound Brook, NJ.
